Several floors, one file

Basement, ground floor, first floor and attic: each with its own plan, but together one installation. Here is how to keep such a file consistent.

Several floors, one file

A home with a basement, ground floor, first floor and attic has four floor plans and one single-line diagram. That ratio is the heart of a good file: the installation is one whole, but the situation differs per level.

One circuit numbering across all levels

Number your circuits continuously across the whole house, not per floor. Circuit 7 may exist only once. If a circuit serves two levels — unavoidable for stairwell lighting — it appears on both plans, with the same number.

What belongs on each plan

  • The name of the level, clearly visible.

  • All points on that level, with their circuit number.

  • The location of the distribution board and any sub-boards.

  • Routes to other levels, where relevant.

Consistency is the real work

Mistakes creep in when you change a circuit on one plan and forget the other, or when you renumber without walking through every plan. So keep all levels in the same project: a change to a circuit carries through everywhere and printing gives you one coherent file.
