Drawing the position diagram: floor plan, symbols and circuit numbers

January 23, 2026By Voltuno

The position diagram tells the inspector where everything is. How detailed should that floor plan be, and what information really belongs on it?

Drawing the position diagram: floor plan, symbols and circuit numbers

The position diagram is the second half of your file. Where the single-line diagram shows the electrical build-up, the position diagram shows location: a simplified floor plan with every socket, light point and fixed appliance, each with its symbol and the number of the circuit it is connected to.

How accurate must the plan be?

It is not an architect's drawing. A schematic representation is enough, as long as the layout is recognisable: walls, doors, room names and the position of the distribution board. Every floor gets its own plan. What matters is that an inspector can walk from the drawing to the actual room without searching.

What belongs on it?

  • All light points, switches and two-way switches.
  • All sockets, with the circuit noted.
  • Fixed appliances: hob, oven, water heater, heat pump, charging point.
  • The distribution board and the location of the main earthing terminal.
  • Special rooms such as the bathroom, with their zones.

The link with the single-line diagram

The two drawings must mirror each other. Circuit 4 on the single-line diagram is circuit 4 on the floor plan, and the point count matches in both directions. That consistency is exactly what an inspector checks: a socket on the plan that appears nowhere on the single-line diagram makes the file incomplete.
