Non-compliant inspection: what now?

March 20, 2026By Voltuno

A negative report is not a disaster, but it is a list of homework. Here is how to read it, prioritise the faults and prepare the re-inspection.

Non-compliant inspection: what now?

The inspector has been and the report is non-compliant. That sounds heavier than it usually is: many installations trip over a handful of points that can be solved in a day. What matters is reading the report correctly and not leaving anything until the eve of the re-inspection.

Decoding the report

Every fault refers to an AREI article and describes exactly what is wrong and where. Sort the remarks into three piles yourself: documents (missing or incorrect diagrams), safety (earthing, RCDs, protective devices) and workmanship (materials, connections, accessibility). You will see at once where the work is.

Where do you start?

  • Anything involving earthing and equipotential bonding: this is personal safety.
  • Missing or insufficiently sensitive residual-current protection.
  • Protective devices that do not match the cable cross-section.
  • The diagrams, which you can fix yourself without calling in an electrician.

The re-inspection

At a re-inspection the body checks the recorded faults again. So work with the report in hand and tick off point by point. If circuits were added or changed during the repairs, be sure to update your single-line and position diagrams — an outdated diagram is a fault in its own right.
